TOPIC:
Development of Valid Assessment Tools for Diagnosing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Deaf People and Their Educational Relevance
ABSTRACT:
The developmental effects of deafness complicate valid assessment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in deaf people. Our research using a non-verbal continuous performance test (Test of Variables of Attention) and a commonly used behavioral self-assessment test (Attention Deficit Scales for Adults) indicates that these tools should be linguistically and culturally appropriate and should be specifically normed on the deaf population. Furthermore, our research indicates that significant relationships exist among attentional, cognitive, and academic variables in school-age deaf children, supporting the educational relevance of assessing ADHD in deaf people. An ASL-English version that we are currently developing of the Attention Deficit Scales for Adults will be demonstrated. Register with Betty Morrow, bbmedr@rit.edu. Beverages will be provided.
