"Declination, downstep and final lowering in English and Greek"
ABSTRACT:
In this paper we discuss factors that affect tonal scaling in English and Greek. In particular, we have experimentally investigated the role of declination in tonal scaling in Greek, and the scope and origin of final lowering in Greek and English. The data from our first experiment suggest that the best predictor of tonal scaling in Greek is the preceding accent and that declination plays a minor role (if any) in peak scaling. The data from our second experiment show that final lowering is present in both languages and that the scaling of the final accent is not affected by declination.?
